Co-production
Co-Production, Time Banking and Mental Health
The National Social Inclusion Programme, in partnership with Time Banks UK, the new economics foundation, Capital Volunteering and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, hosted a national one day event entitled Co-production, Time Banking and Mental Health. This event marked the beginning of this partnership, highlighting the value and benefits of adopting co-productive approaches – where service users are regarded as assets and work alongside professionals as partners in the delivery of services - in mental health services.
The event aimed to explore the values and benefits of co-production, emphasise its relevance to current national policy and mental health services, showcase examples of co-production and time banking, and show mental health services how they can build co-production into service delivery, identifying the first steps to be taken.
The keynote speaker was Dr Edgar S Cahn, creator of Time Dollars, inventor of Time Banking and founder of TimeBanks USA. He talked about the specific recommendations identified in the Joseph Rowntree Foundation study, ‘Hidden Work; Co-production by people outside paid work’ which have not yet been implemented.
A report of the event, capturing the essence of the day and addressing some key questions such as
- what are the implications for staff?
- what are the benefits for service users?
- how do we build co-production into service delivery
